University or Organization: Mälardalen University
Department: School of Education, Culture and Communication
Job Location: Västerås, Sweden
Web Address: http://www.mdh.se
Job Title: Full Professor of English Studies
Job Rank: Full Professor

Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; General Linguistics; Language Acquisition; Ling & Literature

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

The School of Education, Culture and Communication is seeking to further extend its research community, especially in the field of English Studies and education. Therefore we now seek to recruit a Full Professor of English, with a profile either in Linguistics or Literature, as well as a research interest in teaching and learning.

A key responsibility for the new professor will be to take a leading role in the development of research and teaching in English Studies and the teacher training programmes. Other duties of the post include research, teaching – primarily within English Studies and the teacher training programmes – as well as supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate, including doctoral, levels.

The successful applicant will be expected to take an active role in course development, and to promote close collaboration with private and/or public sector bodies in the surrounding community. The position also involves subject-related administrative responsibilities.

Qualification Requirements:
Applicants must demonstrate their academic skills in the form of independent research work which to a significant degree exceeds the requirements for a “docent” or reader. Importance is also attached to documented experience of the planning and leading of research projects.

Academic skills may further encompass the ability to achieve results through cooperation in joint research projects – of benefit to academia as well as industry/the public sector/society in general – and the ability to disseminate research findings.

Experience of and skills in teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels are also required. The assessment of teaching skills will include the planning, carrying out and evaluation of teaching as well as supervision and examination. Therefore, teaching skills must be documented in such a way that their quality can be assessed.

A person appointed as a professor but lacking training in higher education teaching and learning will be offered an in-house course at Mälardalen University during the first year, corresponding to 10 weeks of training.

Assessment Criteria:
The assessment criteria will be based on the skills required for the appointment. In general terms, the assessment criteria include the ability to cooperate as well as the ability and suitability otherwise required to fulfil the duties well.

The same degree of attention will be paid to the assessment of teaching skills as to the assessment of research and other academic skills.

Desirable Qualifications:
- a strong research record within English Studies or closely related disciplines
- a research background and interest in teaching and learning
- experience of acquiring external research funding
- experience of teaching English at different levels in tertiary education and demonstrated excellence in classroom teaching and thesis supervision
- administrative skills
- experience of leading and developing research and teaching environments, and more specifically skills in theoretical and methodological development, experience of working within an interdisciplinary framework, and an international perspective
- good skills regarding cooperation and leadership, as well as the ability to initiate and manage research projects involving national and international collaboration and publication

Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organisation.
