Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics; Language Acquisition; Phonetics; Phonology

Call Deadline: 15-Jan-2014

Meeting Description:

The workshop aims at bringing together scholars and researchers interested in a young and growing domain of third language (L3) phonology in order to promote this field to a wider audience at the congress of Societas Linguistica Europaea (SLE). It seeks to explore new methods and theoretical input for investigating and modeling third language phonological acquisition.

Workshop Convenors:

Magdalena Wrembel (Adam Mickiewicz Univeristy, Poznan, Poland), magdala at wa.amu.edu.pl
Jennifer Cabrelli Amaro (Department of Foreign Languages, United States Air Force Academy, USA), Jennifer.CabrelliAmaro at usafa.edu

2nd Call for Papers:

Advances in the investigation of L3 phonological acquisition

Research on third language (L3) acquisition was triggered by empirical evidence for the fact that the process of acquisition of a foreign language is systematically different depending on whether another foreign language has been previously learnt or not. Moreover, there is a growing recognition that L3/Ln learners differ considerably from second language learners as they have a larger repertoire of linguistic and metalinguistic knowledge at their disposal. Third or Additional Language Acquisition has been recognized as a separate field of inquiry, however, research on the phonetic and phonological aspects has been rather limited to date.

The workshop aims to bridge this gap by bringing together scholars researching this understudied domain of third language (L3) phonology. The workshop seeks to explore new methods and theoretical input for investigating and modeling third language phonological acquisition.

We invite submissions on diverse aspects of phonological acquisition of the third or additional language including, but not limited to:

- Theories / models of multilingual acquisition
- Speech perception / production
- Cross-linguistic influence
- Role of native vs. non-native languages
- Factors conditioning L3 phonological transfer
- Methodological issues
- Pedagogical implications for foreign language pronunciation

Please note that the deadline for abstract submission is 15 January 2014. You are requested to submit an abstract via the Submit Abstract form available at the SLE2014 website at: http://wwwling.arts.kuleuven.be/conference/admin/SubmitAbstractSLE.

Abstracts i) are to be anonymous, ii) should contain between 400 and 500 words (exclusive of references), and iii) must state research questions, approach, method, data, and (expected) results. Abstracts will be rated by two peer reviewers from the SLE Scientific Committee, as well as by the workshop convenors. The notification of acceptance will be sent by 31 March 2014.

You can find further details concerning the conference in the second call for papers at: http://sle2014.eu/. Should you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact us.
