Meeting Description:

Cognitive Neuroscience: Networks of Clinical and Experimental Techniques in Malaysia (CoNNeCT'M 2014)

Bridging the Gap: Connecting Neuroscience and Evidence-based Practices in Clinical and Non-clinical Research in Malaysia

A current research trend in clinical cognitive science programmes is the search for insights from the use of neuro-behavioural methods to monitor and validate therapeutic interventions and to establish and expand the evidence base. In line with this research direction, use of neuroscience methodology has been explored as a means for providing better understanding of natural development and clinical degradation that affects the brain, and has been particularly successful in contributing towards the understanding of the cognitive processing of linguistic and world knowledge, of subjects in various conditions of health, illness, and aging. Where neuroscience intersects with linguistics, its applications extend to the study of neural mechanisms in the human brain that control the comprehension, production, and acquisition of language.

In an effort to establish a pioneer research programme of cognitive neuroscience and neurolinguistics in Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, University of Reading, United Kingdom, and University of Reading Malaysia Campus, have come together to promote a cross-institutional and cross-disciplinary programme. This conference has the potential to harness knowledge, skills, and expertise from diverse but complementary fields available at both local and international institutions.

The 1st International Conference on Cognitive Neuroscience is hosted by Universiti Putra Malaysia. It comprises a one-day programme of paper presentations, followed by three days of workshops on cognitive neuroscience methodologies conducted by invited speakers from the University of Reading.

Invited Speakers:

Professor Dr James Douglas Saddy, University of Reading, United Kingdom
Professor Dr. Theodoros Marinis, University of Reading
Professor Dr. Jeanine Caroline Treffers-Daller, University of Reading
Professor Dr. Abdul Jalil Nordin, Universiti Putra Malaysia
Associate Professor Dr. Rogayah Abdul Razak, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia
Associate Professor Dr. Daisy Powell, University of Reading

Papers sharing research related to the following subthemes and their role in enhancing evidence-based research are particularly welcome:

- Auditory processing disorders
- Psychoacoustics
- Speech and language pathology
- Speech production and perception
- Sentence processing
- First and second language acquisition
- Specific language impairment
- Linguistic analysis of disordered language data
- Language assessment tools
- Language attrition
- Language and aging
- Cognition and decision making
- Geriatrics and cognition
- Neuroimaging techniques
- Neuroscience research methodologies
- Literacy development
- Bilingualism
- Multilingualism and literacy

Submission of Proposals:

There are two modes of presentation at the conference: parallel paper presentation (oral mode) and poster presentation (poster mode). Abstracts and full papers are to be sent via email in Word document format to the conference Chair at ntyap at upm.edu.my and ngeeyap at gmail.com.
