Description:

Within the framework of the network program University Campus Fryslân the Frisian Academy is looking for a PhD student research into changes in the conjugation of Frisian verbs

This project is a part of a partnership with the ACLC (Amsterdam Centre for Language and Communication) of the University of Amsterdam.

Function Information:
The purpose of this study is twofold. The (more) recent changes in the conjugation of Frisian verbs should be inventoried and accounted for. Within this complex system the ratio between external and internal forces: the great pressure that Dutch exerts on Frisian on the one hand, and the analogical restructuring of the verb paradigm to maintain a transparent relationship between form and function on the other hand, should also be investigated.

Job Requirements:
- a master’s degree with excellent grades in linguistics or in linguistics of an individual language;
- experience in and affinity with empirical research involving language-corpora and digital data collections;
- experience in and affinity with the analysis of large digital data collections using existing software (databases, spreadsheets and mapping software);
- working knowledge of Frisian at (near-)native level;
- good academic writing and presentation skills;
- good interpersonal and organizational skills;
- strong interest in a scientific career

Information:
For additional information, please contact Prof. Dr. Arjen Versloot (University of Amsterdam: apversloot at uva.nl) or Dr. Willem Visser (daily supervisor; Frisian Academy: 058-2343037, wvisser at fryske-akademy.nl). The full project description is available on the website of the Frisian Academy (www.fryske-akademy.nl).

Appointment:
The PhD program consists of four years. The candidate receives an initial 1-year contract offer. Based on an assessment of, among other things, a written research result the appointment can be extended by three years. It concerns a full-time PhD appointment (38 hours per week). The appointment will start on March 1, 2014, or as soon as possible after this date. The full-time salary will be € 2083,- gross per month in the first year, rising to € 2664,- in the fourth year. Holiday pay and end-of-year bonus are according to the CAO (Collective Labour Agreement) for Dutch Universities. We offer a wide range of benefits.

Application:
The application for this position should include a cover letter, a Curriculum Vitae (including a list of publications), a summary of the relevant diplomas and marks, the Master Thesis, and/or a research paper, and one or two references. The application should be e-mailed to PenO at fryske-akademy.nl by January 15th 2014. Please use 'PhD change verb conjugation’ as the subject line.
The interviews are scheduled in the last week of January 2014 (27th – 31st).

Application Deadline: 15-Jan-2014
