Type of Work: Lang Materials Development

Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics

Duration: 08-Jul-2013 to 16-Aug-2013
Voluntary
Internship Location: Princeton, New Jersey, USA
Minimum Education Level: MA
Special Qualifications: Job Requirements:

The TOEFL iBT test, the TOEIC tests, K–12 English language learning assessments and the TPK assessment are global measures, so ETS actively seeks candidates who can bring diverse experiences and perspectives to the work. Interns must have a very high degree of fluency in English but do not need to be native speakers, nor do they need to be U.S. citizens. Non-U.S. citizens must have appropriate work visas.

All interns must have excellent writing skills. The work requires verbal precision and sensitivity to nuance, analytic skill, attention to detail, and receptiveness to instruction. Interns must be able to work well individually and collaboratively, carefully consider constructive feedback, and manage their time effectively to meet targets.

Applicants for the TPK assessment internship must have the following additional qualification:
• coursework in Education or TESOL at the graduate level or at the upper level of an undergraduate program, with at least one course focusing on Pedagogy

The ELL summer internship workforce includes undergraduate students, graduate students, teachers, and professors.

Description:
Educational Testing Service (ETS) in Princeton, N.J., is now accepting applications for summer interns for our English Language Learning (ELL) program. Approximately 47 interns will be hired.

Position Overview:
ELL summer interns will produce materials for use on large-scale, high-stakes standardized tests of English language and English-language teaching proficiency. Each intern will work on one of the following:

• TOEFL iBT® Test
The TOEFL iBT test is taken by nonnative speakers of English who are planning to apply to a college or university in an English-speaking country.

• TOEIC® Tests
The TOEIC tests are taken principally by people who need to communicate with both native and nonnative speakers of English in the context of the global workplace.

• K–12 Assessments in English Language Learning (K–12 ELL)
The K–12 ELL assessments are taken by nonnative English language learners at all grade levels who are studying English as part of their school curriculum, by applicants to high schools where instruction takes place in English, and by high school students preparing for college entrance.

• ELTeachTM: Test of Professional Knowledge for English Language Teaching (TPK)
The TPK assessment is taken by nonnative speakers of English who need to demonstrate that they have the essential pedagogical knowledge needed to teach English in English.

The test development work is intellectually challenging and rewarding. The work may include:
• writing items that test knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension
• creating conversations and talks that test listening comprehension
• developing scenarios and prompts that allow candidates to demonstrate their writing, speaking or teaching skills
• analyzing curriculum and matching the curriculum with prescribed test specifications

Program Details:
The six-week program begins on Monday, July 8, and ends on Friday, August 16. TOEIC Speaking & Writing offers an additional, optional two weeks of work from August 19 through August 30. Interns are expected to work 8:30–5:00, Monday through Friday, for the whole program, and will receive attractive compensation. All work is conducted at the ETS Rosedale campus in Princeton, New Jersey. Interns must provide or arrange their own housing and transportation.

Application Deadline: 24-Mar-2013
