Meeting Description:

The symposium concerns itself with questions regarding the functions of symbolic representations of the city. Cities as urban spaces can be understood not only as heterogeneously populated multidimensional structures, but also as functions of symbolic beliefs, judgments, conceptions, and desires. More generally, urban spaces are the end or effect of all representations connected with the city. This raises questions as to which ends these urban representations pursue and what effects they evoke in the process.

The symposium wishes to address these ends and effects of urban representation from an interdisciplinary perspective. Even early pragmatic theories have pointed out that signs - such as linguistic signs in propositions - do not simply represent the world, pointing to some extra-linguistic reality; they are also a form of action.

The title of this symposium - The Declarative City - ties in with this view of language. The symposium investigates the ways in which signs not only refer to the world, but also serve as instruments to create worlds.

Texts about the city, films, images, dialects, urban image campaigns, signs, graffiti, street-art, city-planning, and countless other phenomena of this kind are not only shaped by conceptions of urbanity, they also create urbanity in their realization, whether this effect is intentional or not. Acts of communication in and about cities turn abstract spaces into places that can be identified and stored in memory. This declarative act of place-making lies at the core of this symposium.

Call for Papers:

The symposium is interdisciplinary by nature and includes topics from the fields of linguistics, literary studies, sociology, architecture and all related disciplines, as long as they focus on sign-based processes of urban communication. Both theoretical and methodological or empirical contributions are welcome. 

Please send an abstract of a maximum of 400 words in length along with information about your research areas and institutional affiliation by 5 April 2013 to info at usrn.de. A notification of acceptance will be sent by 20 April 2013.

The conference languages are both English and German.
