Description:

The Center for the Study of Languages first opened its doors in 2005 as a hub
for technology innovation and implementation, and materials and professional
development for language instructors at all levels.

The charge of the new Director will be to lead the Center forward, expanding
and building on its strengths to achieve a fuller integration of language
learning within the scholarship and teaching of literature and culture, to
enhance language-learning resources for undergraduate and graduate students,
to oversee the expansion and contribute to the pedagogical training and
professional development of language instructors, with an understanding of the
impact this training plays in the professional lives of faculty, lecturers,
and graduate students associated with the Center, and to assume teaching
responsibilities appropriate to the mission of the Center.

Reporting to both the Humanities Division and the College and overseeing
professional support staff and student employees, the new Director will have
overall responsibility for the management, staffing, budgeting, and
development of programming for the CSL. Other responsibilities include
increasing the CSL’s visibility on campus, working closely with the
development office to lead fundraising efforts, working with other units (like
the Center for Teaching Excellence) on the development of curricular and
pedagogical initiatives, and developing and overseeing the implementation of a
sustainable and responsible financial model for ongoing CSL operations.

The Director will have a doctoral degree in an academically-related
discipline, be actively engaged in research and/or development of pedagogical
material, and have experience teaching a foreign language at the
post-secondary level as well as in-depth knowledge of language pedagogy and/or
applied linguistics pertaining to second language acquisition and instruction.

The Director will also possess cutting-edge knowledge of and experience with
multimedia technologies as well as in-depth knowledge of language pedagogy
and/or applied linguistics pertaining to second language acquisition and
instruction. Supervisory and financial management experience, including the
ability to prepare and manage budgets and track finances, is required.
Experience with fundraising, including writing and/or directing external and
internal grants, and experience in planning and conducting meetings and
workshops are strongly preferred.

The University of Chicago is a member both of the Consortium for Language
Teaching and Learning, comprising Brown, Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, and Yale,
and of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, comprising the member
schools of the Big Ten plus the University of Chicago.
In view of this, the Director must possess the ability to develop and carry
out cross-institutional initiatives as well as to foster collaboration across
the units and divisions of the University of Chicago. Superb administrative
and organizational skills are also a must.

The University of Chicago has retained Sage Search Partners to assist with the
search. Nominations and general inquiries should be directed in confidence to
Patricia Herzog at the contact email address below. Those wishing to apply
should go directly to the University of Chicago’s Career Opportunities website

Review of applications will begin February 25th, 2013. A cover letter,
resume, and list of references are required to be considered.
