Meeting Description:

The Chinese American Educational Research and Development Association (CAERDA), which is affiliated with the American Educational Research Association (AERA), is an international professional organization of educators and educational researchers. It is committed to excellence in learning and instruction across the educational spectrum. CAERDA holds an annual international conference in the United States. The conference serves as an open forum for interdisciplinary discussion and scholarly exchange of ideas among educational researchers and practitioners, who present their original research and draw implications for the broad educational community. The conference program primarily consists of empirical studies selected through a blind peer-review process. Additionally, there are invited presentations, symposia, and panel discussions that feature the annual conference theme. Selected high quality papers are invited to submit to the New Waves-Educational Research and Development (CAERDA’s peer-reviewed online journal), or to CAERDA’s feature publication in its book series.

This year CAERDA will hold a special international conference during July 8-10, 2013 in Xi’an, China to provide an additional venue for the vast majority of colleagues in China to exchange research ideas and findings besides our annual conference in the United States. Famed as the cradle of Chinese civilization, Xi’an not only served as China’s capital for over 1,000 years (including Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang dynasties), but also was the starting point of the legendary Silk Road for trade and cultural exchanges between the East and the West. Xi’an has countless historical and cultural attractions, including the renowned Terracotta Army for the First Emperor. It also has numerous K-12 schools, universities, and research institutions. Indeed, Xi’an is an ideal place for the CAERDA’s 2013 international conference.

Call for Papers:

The theme of the 2013 international conference is ‘American and Chinese education in a Global Context.’ As more and more people have come to realize, the relationship between China and the United States will be one of the most important ones in the 21st century. Currently, China is the number one country of origin for international students and scholars pursuing study and research in the United States. Meanwhile, the United States plans to send 100,000 American students to study in China. In light of these wide-ranging exchanges, students bring with them ways of thinking and behaviors rooted in their home country, some of which may not be compatible with each other’s classroom practices and interaction norms. Exploration of these issues will be meaningful not only to educators for these visiting students, but also to the broad educational communities in both countries to learn about and from each other. This timely conference aims to bring educators and researchers from around the world to critically examine the educational policies, practices, and assessments in China and the United States. Each paper will be situated within the current research literature, connect with practices and innovations, as well as flesh out some of the larger theoretical/pedagogical issues across the Pacific shores.

While we are interested in proposals that are directly related to the conference theme, we also welcome proposals in other areas of research that contribute to the broad understanding of curriculum, instruction, policy, assessment, and educational research, or the CAERDA’s overall mission, across the following disciplinary areas:

Area 1: Literacy and content literacy education (e.g., teaching and learning languages, mathematics, science, or other disciplinary areas)
Area 2: Curriculum development and classroom practice (e.g., digital technology in education, innovative pedagogical practices, or curriculum designs)
Area 3: Educational research methods, student performance, and assessment
Area 4: Educational policies, resources, and leadership
Area 5: Globalization and education related to Chinese and overseas Chinese populations
Area 6: Comparative cultural and educational studies
Area 7: Others (any other issues not covered by the above areas)
