Call for Papers:

The workshop aims to examine the construction of humour in press news discourse in the late modern period. The scope of analysis comprises any print news texts in which the conventions of the genre, either in terms of structure or content, are parodied, satirised or simply the object of metatextual humorous commentary and a deliberate pretext for amusement. However, besides journalistic pieces proper, other genres such as reviews, letters, diaries, public documents and speeches may also provide insightful material into how features of print news were humorously perceived and constructed during the late modern period. Neither these genres nor the print news itself are confined to British English. We welcome varieties of LModE outside Britain. The contributions should focus on synchronic/diachronic aspects of texts and genres ranging from1700-1900.

Papers addressing any of the following news-related aspects are welcome: 

- Structure of news discourse (e.g. chronological structure, inverted pyramid, lead, headline etc.)
- Language of news (lexis, syntax, morphology etc.)
- News discourse (register, evaluation, interactive features, etc.)
- News genres (editorials, hard news, features, letters to the editor, announcements, sports)

The examination of humour could incorporate any of the following areas:

- The linguistics of humour construction: phonetic and/or semantic puns, syntactic ambiguity, lexical choice
- Humorous stylistic devices such as irony, sarcasm, hyperbole and understatement
- Comic genres such as satire, parody and caricature 
- The questions of comic intertetexuality and allusion 
- The pragmatics of humorous interaction: presupposition, speech act misfiring, implicature, conversational maxim flouting, relevance, the unsaid, misunderstandings, politeness violations, etc. 
- Humour theories: SSTH (1985), GTVH (1991), OSTH (2011) 

Abstracts for 15-minute presentations should not exceed 300 words in length (references excluded). The deadline for the submission of abstracts is 15 February 2013. Acceptance of the abstract will be notified by 28 February 2013. In the abstract, please clearly indicate that the abstract is for the Workshop ‘Humour in Press News Discourse (1700-1900)’.
