Meeting Description:

The sixth annual GRAPHSY (Graduate Portuguese & Hispanic Symposium) will take place March 22-23, 2013 at Georgetown University.

This year, the theme of our conference is dedicated to the playful interaction of words. Language passes through stages of acquisition and transformation, similar to the ways in which parts of the body interact and communicate within the contexts of power and subalternity, from the silences of trauma to the voices of play. Tongue twisters also speak of twists and turns associated with language: obstacles, impediments, journeys, and changes.

Keynote Speakers:

Nuria Sagarra is an Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese in Rutgers University with research interests in psycholinguistics; language processing of morphology and syntax; cognitive individual differences; and language training techniques to facilitate language learning. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and joined Rutgers from The Pennsylvania State University.

Sylvia Molloy is an Argentine novelist and critic. She holds the Albert Schweitzer Chair in the Humanities. She is the author of two novels En breve cárcel (1981) - translated as Certificate of Absence (1989) - and El común olvido (2002), and has also written a collection of short prose pieces, Varia imaginación (2003). Her critical work includes La Diffusion de la littérature hispano-américaine en France au XXe siècle (1972), Las letras de Borges (1979), At Face Value: Autobiographical Writing in Spanish America (1991) and edited volumes such as Hispanisms and Homosexualities (1998) and Poéticas de la distancia. Adentro y afuera de la literatura argentina (2006). She has been a fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Social Science Research Council, and the Civitella Ranieri Foundation. She has served as President of the Modern Language Association of America and of the Instituto Internacional de Literatura Iberoamericana and holds an honorary degree in humane letters from Tulane University.
