Division of English Studies

Job Title: 	Assistant Professor (Lecturer) in Modern English Language or
Applied Linguistics

Contract Status:	The post will be offered on a fixed-term contract with the
University of Nottingham Ningbo, China for up to five years in the first
instance with effect from 1 September 2013, with the possibility of renewal.

Hours of Work: 	Full-time.

Salary:     £33,230 - £44,607 per annum. depending on skills and experience
(salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance).  In
addition, an attractive package including accommodation allowance, travel
allowance and insurance will be provided international appointments.

Location:	University of Nottingham Ningbo, China.

Job Outline:   The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to
teaching and curriculum development for undergraduate and postgraduate
programmes, play a role in collaborative research projects, and conduct
ongoing original research and publications.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Research
-  To undertake research in Modern English Language/Applied Linguistics.

Teaching
-  To prepare and deliver lectures, seminars and tutorials at undergraduate
and postgraduate levels.

Administration
-  To undertake administrative work/management functions if required  in the
Division of English and the Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics and to
ensure the efficient and effective completion of the work of the Division and
the University. This will include membership of relevant committees and
working groups.

This job description may be subject to revision following discussion with the
person appointed and forms part of the contract of employment.

Person Specification:

Essential/Desirable Qualifications 

Education	
-  PhD (or close to completion) in English/Modern English Language/ Applied
Linguistics or related area.
-  TESOL qualification (e.g. Cambridge ESOL Diploma).
-  Postgraduate qualification in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education or
equivalent.
-  Membership of relevant professional bodies.

Skills/Training
-  Evidence of ability to produce high quality research.
-  Research skills.
-  Excellent communication and presentation skills in English.	
-  Evidence of administrative skills.

Experience
-  Experience of teaching/tutorial work in relevant subjects at undergraduate
and postgraduate level in an international English-speaking institution.
- Evidence of successful working with external partners e.g. funding bodies,
industry and governmental agencies.
-  Experience of PhD/masters supervision.
-  Experience of programme design.

Personal Attributes
-  Personal enthusiasm to develop links between relevant academic teams in
China and the UK.
-  Adaptability and flexibility.
-  Ability to work in the context of new systems of academic practice, and
assist in their further development.
-  Ability to complete administrative duties effectively to required
deadlines.	Evidence of working in interdisciplinary teams.
-  Experience of working overseas.
-  An understanding of the higher education context in the UK and China.
