We are excited to share the news of Prof. Dr. Anvita Abbi, Professor of
Linguistics at JNU, New Delhi, being awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth
highest civilian award in India, in recognition of her contributions, in the
category of 'Education and Literature.' This award to Prof. Abbi comes after
years of her work on the lesser-known languages of India, including languages
of many marginalized and tribal communities. Her momentous career in
Linguistics has also seen her work on the extremely endangered languages of
the Andamanese group of languages. This recognition by the Govt. of India of a
linguist's work is also a recognition of the aspirations of the people whose
languages she studied and brought to the attention of the global body of
linguists. It is a recognition to the members of those communities who in
spite of their tremendous struggles for survival, thought it worth-while to
spend their time and share their knowledge and world-views with us through
her.
