Special session: Empirical Approaches to Information Structure

Linguists working on information structure (IS) will agree that the issue of IS can only be adequately discussed with reference to a specific theoretical framework and based on solid empirical evidence. However, they will disagree on exactly what kind of empirical data is needed and on how it is to be implemented in a grammatical model that accounts for the syntactic and prosodic form and gives rise to the intended semantic and pragmatic meaning.

The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers embracing different empirical approaches to IS to discuss the different types of linguistic evidence in relation to models of information structure.

Call for Papers:

The workshop includes - but is not limited to - the following topics:

1. Syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and phonological approaches to information structure and the theory of grammar.
2. Typological and crosslinguistic evidence for different notions of focus (contrastive vs. presentational), topic (contrastive vs. noncontrastive), presupposition, contrast, and dichotomies such as given vs. new, theme vs. rheme, topic vs. comment, background vs. focus.
3. Experimental studies on the syntax, intonation and interpretation of structures which yield insights into the role of IS and its interaction with other modules.  
4. Computational and computer linguistic accounts of IS-related phenomena in texts and corpus data.
5. The phonology of intonation and its interpretation in the theory of grammar.

The special session will take place within the main conference programme.

Submissions:

We invite abstracts for 30+15 minute talks and also for poster presentations. Unless you specify otherwise on your abstract, we shall consider all submissions first as talks and then as posters.  We will not normally accept more than two abstracts per person, and of these only one may be single-authored. 

Abstracts should be no more than 3 pages long including data, graphics and references. They should have a 2.5cm margin on all sides, and should be written in at least 11 point Arial (or Helvetica or Nimbus Sans L or Liberation Sans) font.
