University or Organization: University of Stuttgart, Germany

Job Rank: Post Doc; Researcher

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Description:

The Institute for Natural Language Processing (IMS) at the University of
Stuttgart, Germany, announces the position of a researcher in the group of
Prof. Dr. Jonas Kuhn. We are seeking an experienced computational linguist to
join a dynamic team of researchers working on models and tools for robust
linguistic analysis at various levels of description and for a range of
languages. The successful candidate will play a central role in coordinating
efforts at the intersection of fundamental research into linguistically
grounded statistical NLP models and methodological and infrastructural work
for critically reflected text analytics, with an emphasis on the developing
field of the Digital Humanities (or eHumanities).

Our group is involved in several eHumanities activities (the Department is one
of nine German Centers in the CLARIN infrastructure initiative, and we are
partners in the "e-Identity" project, collaborating with Political Science,
and the "ePoetics" project, collaborating with Literary Studies) and in
research projects within SFB 732 ("Incremental specification in context")
addressing linguistically grounded grammars for parsing and generation,
statistical dependency parsers and co-reference resolution systems, and a
database infrastructure for combining multi-level (automatic) corpus
annotation. A current guiding objective is to establish a methodology and
platforms/webservices that allow researchers to adapt generic text analysis
models and tools to specific corpora and corpus-oriented research questions,
taking advantage of state-of-the-art techniques in computational linguistics
and machine learning.

The ideal candidate will have:
- A background in corpus-oriented computational linguistics and statistical
NLP methodology,
- Demonstrated experience in project management in an academic context,
- Good command of German and English.

Prior experience in research infrastructure initiatives and expertise in web
services, mark-up languages, standardization of language resources, and/or
metadata standards is desirable.

A Ph.D. or Master degree in Computational Linguistics, Computer Science or a
related field is required.

The starting date for the position is October 1st, 2013 or as soon as
possible. The initial period of appointment will be 1-2 years, with the
possibility of renewal subject to the funding situation.

The position is at the rank of 'Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter', with a salary
as determined by the German public employee standard (Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L,
ranging from 41000-58000 Euro per year, depending on prior work experience).
If the successful applicant is a postdoctoral or senior researcher, the
position will be filled as a full-time position; for eligible doctoral
researchers (i.e., candidates with sufficient project management experience),
a part-time contract (67%) and the possibility to prepare a Ph.D. along with
the project work can be considered.

Applications should include a CV, an outline of research experience, as well
as names and addresses of 2-3 references.

Applications received by August 1st, 2013 will receive full consideration,
although interviews may start at any time. The position is open until filled.

The University of Stuttgart is an equal opportunity employer. Applications of
women are strongly encouraged. Severely challenged persons will be given
preference in case of equal qualifications.
