Meeting Description:

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Miami is pleased to announce its annual graduate student conference, “‘Time for Outrage’ Around the World,” to be held October 3-4, 2013.

In memory of Stéphane Hessel, the recently deceased French writer and activist, whose essay “Time for Outrage” became the manifesto for anti-capitalist activism that inspired several resistance movements, the conference aims to interrogate the discourses of subversion, and the massive and popular uprisings that have emerged in the past few years, such as Occupy Wall Street, Les Indignés, los indignados, the Arab Spring, Gay Marriage Movements, Proposition 8, and Yo soy 132, among others. The aim of this conference is to determine the particularities, similarities, and differences of these social phenomena. How have social networks, the Internet and the media intervened in these movements? Can we talk of e- revolution?
