Globalisation - Challenges for Translators and Interpreters

We are pleased to announce the conference ‘Globalisation - Challenges for Translators and Interpreters’. The conference will take place at Jinan University, Zhuhai, China, from Friday 6 December to Sunday 8 December 2013.

Professor Roberto Valdeón (University of Oviedo, Spain)
Dr. Saihong Li (University of Stirling, United Kingdom)
Associate Professor Henrik Gottlieb (University of Copenhagen, Denmark)
Professor Myriam Salama-Carr (University of Salford, United Kingdom)

Call for Papers:

A number of translation studies researchers have rightly pointed out the relative absence of translation and interpreting as sites of inquiry in the general discourse of globalisation. The centrality of language mediation to the overcoming of spatial and cultural barriers in the context of globalisation needs to be interrogated further, both as a consequence of globalisation and as a significant factor in the way globalisation is constructed and perceived. This transnational, cross-disciplinary conference will provide a forum to discuss the challenges of Globalisation for Interpreting and Translation studies from theoretical and practical perspectives, including issues of language hegemony and language varieties. Self-reflexive studies are particularly welcome from practitioners of translation or interpreting.

Possible topics include:

Translation and/or interpreting in the discourse of globalisation
Language hegemony in the context of globalisation
English as the language of globalisation
Lingua Franca
Globalisation theory and language mediation
Training translators and/or interpreters for the global context
‘Ethics’ of translation and/or interpreting in a context of globalisation
Translating and interpreting on the margins
Aspects of localisation
The translation industry in a global context
Interrogating the concepts of ‘knowledge’ in a globalisation context

Topics may include, but are not limited to, the ethical, theoretical and practical of Interpreting and Translation studies in a context of globalisation.

Apart from paper proposals, the conference organisers welcome proposal for a range of discussion formats, in addition to paper proposals. This could include poster presentations or roundtables.

Publication:

Selected papers from the conference will be published in special issues of refereed international translation and interpreting studies journals, Forum and Perspectives: Studies in Translation.

An abstract of 250-300 words and a mini-biography (50-100 words) should be submitted electronically as an email attachment to Dr. Yan Fangming: yfmoffice at 163.com and Dr. Saihong Li: globalization.zhuhai2013 at gmail.com. The deadline for submission of abstracts will be on Monday 16 September 2013 for international participants who need to apply for visa to China and 30 September for those who do not. Notification of acceptance of proposals will be communicated by Monday 30 September 2013. 

The conference website will be available in due course, including information on conference programme and abstracts, conference fee, registration details, social programme including excursions. The conference programme and abstracts will be available online in early November.
