Language Hegemony: Implications of Globalization and Migration on Language Use Through Lifetime/ Lisbon, Portugal

Host Institution: Universidade Nova de Lisboa
Coordinating Institution: Universidade Nova de Lisboa
Website: http://www.fcsh.unl.pt/phd/summer

Dates: 09-Sep-2013 - 13-Sep-2013
Location: Lisbon, Portugal

Focus: Each class will revolve around one of the central “Five Questions” first raised by Noam Chomsky in his 1986 book Knowledge of Language and frequently revisited and sharpened since. The first half is more “linguisticky”, introducing the question of the day, while the second half of each class deals with more practical considerations from a practitioner’s perspective on a globally migrating world.

Class 1: Universal knowledge of language
What is knowledge of language?

Class 2: Acquisition of language across the lifespan
How is that knowledge acquired?

Class 3: Use of language around the world
How is that knowledge put to use?

Class 4: When languages falls by the wayside
How is that knowledge implemented in the brain?

Class 5: Evolution and change in a global world
How did that knowledge emerge in the species?

Minimum Education Level: BA

Description:
This course is part of the Lisbon Summer School in Science, Society and Culture. The course aims to familiarize students with the formal study of language on the one hand and the role of speech pathologists on the other, all the while taking as point of departure the role of language in a globalized society.

In this sense, the instructors not only hope to impart some of their insights from the disciplines of biolinguistics and speech-language therapy to the complete novice, but also bring home a clear message: Language is important, and in times like these, with massive migrations and longer life spans, even more so in many interesting ways.
