Meeting Description:

The 3rd International Conference on Non-Dominant Varieties of Pluricentric Languages is a two-day international conference for scholars working on non-dominant varieties of pluricentric languages.

The first international conference in this series (Graz, 2011) drew together scholars and researchers from around the globe, and led to the publication of an edited volume, Non-dominating Varieties of Pluricentric Languages. Getting the Picture. In memory of Prof. Michael Clyne (Wien et. al., Peter Lang Verlag, 2011). The second conference (Salamanca, 2012) and resulting edited volume, Exploring Linguistic Standards in Non-Dominant Varieties of Pluricentric Languages (Wien et. al., Peter Lang Verlag, 2013) built on this, and we are now looking to widen the scope of the conference and deal not only with non-dominant varieties but also with pluricentric languages in general.

In the first two conferences it became clear that the scope of what constitutes pluricentricity is far wider than was originally envisaged. When Michael Clyne coined the term ‘pluricentric languages’ (1992) it made sense to restrict it to national standard languages of the ‘larger’ pluricentric languages. However, it is now clear that many other languages should be included, such as Catalan in Europe and Bengali in Asia. One of the objectives of the next conference, therefore, is to work towards a viable definition of what pluricentricity actually means in the context of research on non-dominant varieties. We also aim to explore unresolved questions of pluricentric theory and explore the languages of the world in order to better understand the relationships between dominant and non-dominant varieties.

The third conference will be held at the University of Surrey, which is conveniently situated near international airports (Heathrow and Gatwick), and 40 minutes by train from London Waterloo. Full board accommodation will be available on campus, and the social programme will include a reception on the evening of 2 July, and a ceilidh on 3. Full details will be online shortly.

Call for Papers:

We welcome papers on theoretical and empirical studies of pluricentricity, and the interactions between dominant and non-dominant varieties. These could include studies on language policy, linguistic and sociolinguistic relationships, pragmatic and interactional variation between dominant and non-dominant varieties. We particularly welcome contributions on languages of Africa, Asia and the Americas.

All members of the working group on non-dominant varieties of pluricentric languages, as well as all interested scholars, are invited to submit abstracts (20 minutes presentation, 10 minutes discussion) by 17 February 2014. You will be notified about the acceptance of your paper by 15 March 2014.

Abstracts should be written in English and sent to Dawn Marley (d.marley at surrey.ca.uk) as an email attachment in word. Abstracts should not exceed 300 words plus four keywords.

Organising Committee:

Rudolf Muhr (Graz, Austria)
Carla Amorós Negro (Salamanca, Spain)
Leo Kretzenbacher (Melbourne, Australia)
Catrin Norrby (Stockholm, Sweden)
Dawn Marley (Surrey, UK)
