Description:

Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Davis. This is a nine-month tenure-track faculty appointment 

The Department of Linguistics manages the undergraduate program in linguistics, supports an interdisciplinary graduate group that manages M.A. and Ph.D. programs in linguistics, and contributes to a faculty cluster with collaborative research and teaching missions in cognitive science.

Responsibilities: 
The appointee is expected to conduct research at the interface between linguistics and cognitive science focused on the production or perception of spoken or signed language, and/or phonetic science or laboratory phonology. Possible research specialties include but are not limited to application of experimental methods to the analysis of articulatory processes, computer simulations in phonetics and  phonology, application of statistical methods and  principles of information theory to the study of the acoustic signal, contextual recognition of sound and  integration of multimodal cues in speech processing, computational models of the representation of language sounds, the cognitive and  perceptual reality of phonological constructs, and  the development and analysis of spoken/signed language corpora.

The appointee will be required to teach courses in phonetics and phonology, undergraduate-level courses in general topics in linguistics or cognitive science, and graduate level courses in the area of specialization. Supervision of graduate students, student advising, involvement in curricular development, and performance of University service are expected.

Qualifications: 
A Ph.D. in linguistics, cognitive science, or a closely related field is required prior to the beginning of the appointment service period start date. The applicant should also have experience and interests related to production or perception of spoken or signed language, phonetic science, or laboratory phonology. A background in cognitive science, psychology of language, clinical linguistics, mathematical and statistical methods in language research, corpus linguistics, or natural language processing is desired.

Salary: 
Commensurate with experience within the Assistant Professor ranks at the University of California.
