Linguistic Field(s): Anthropological Linguistics; Language Acquisition; Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 15-Jul-2013

Meeting Description:

The aim of the conference is to discuss the various theoretical models and methodologies that have been implemented to describe language contact, particularly in the research carried out in Brazil. We shall focus on the social impact of language contact, on the impact of mobility on linguistic and social practices, on language ideology in relation to mobility and urbanization, and on the linguistic construction of identity.

Brazil offers a rich landscape of contacts between peoples and languages. The various population movements to, from or within Brazil, are accompanied by various forms of societal multilingualism and individual or family plurilingualism whose linguistic, social and cultural consequences have yet to be addressed.

This conference aims to facilitate the dialogue between different possible approaches to language contact, both within and beyond Brazil’s borders. It also aims to contribute to a creation of a network between researchers concerned with language contact based on the notions of mobility, migration, urbanization and border. Bringing students and researchers with common research interests, and all conceptual and methodological diversity, is an opportunity to build collaborations between Brazilian and foreign institutions, as well as initiatives designed to consolidate innovative research that still remains highly compartmentalized.

The languages of the conference will be Portuguese, French, Spanish and English

- Societal multilingualism
