Meeting Description:

The conference is organized by Hedmark University College, Norway, in cooperation with the Association for Language Awareness (ALA). ALA supports and promotes activities related to explicit knowledge about language, and conscious perception and sensitivity in language learning, language teaching and language use in professional settings. This conference will focus on the state of the art within relevant research areas and on challenges and future avenues of research.

The programme will consist of full paper presentations, work-in-progress reports and poster sessions. A pre-conference workshop will be arranged for PhD students, as an opportunity to engage with peers and senior scholars.

Ofelia García (City University of New York): Language Awareness in Teacher Education
Kenneth Hyltenstam (Stockholm University): Language Awareness in Polyglots 
Arne Torp (University of Oslo): The Language Situation in the Nordic Countries

Call for Papers:

We welcome abstracts that address any aspects of research on language awareness. In accordance with the conference theme, submissions are encouraged to focus on the state of the art within relevant research areas, and on challenges and future avenues of research related to language awareness. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
 
The role of language awareness in:

- first, second and other language acquisition
- language learning and teaching
- teacher education
- language contact situations
- work place communication
- etc.

The relation of language awareness to:

- language policy
- intra- and inter-language variation
- modern technology and digital communication
 
Papers will be allocated 30 minutes, including 10 minutes for discussion. Posters (max. size A0, portrait format) will be presented in a special session and remain on display throughout the conference.
 
Abstract Submission:

Deadline for abstract submissions: November 15, 2013. Abstracts must be submitted via the conference website, which will contain further instructions about submission, format, etc. (If you should have difficulty submitting your abstract online, please send an email to ala2014 at hihm.no.) 
 
Abstracts must not exceed a maximum of 350 words (exclusive of references). Authors may submit a maximum of two abstracts if at least one of these is co-authored. The abstracts will be reviewed anonymously, and notification of acceptance will be sent at the beginning of 2014. Registration will open in December 2013.
