Meeting Description:

The doctoral students in the Applied Lingustics Ph.D. Program at the University of Barcelona are organizing a workshop on the topic of Mixed-Methods in Second Language Acquisition Research: Benefits and Challenges. The workshop is addressed to doctoral students and young researchers involved in SLA research.

The workshop aims at providing a clearer view of how the combination of both quantitative and qualitative approaches can be used in Second Language Acquisition Research, with an emphasis on the benefits and challenges of this combination. Teresa Cadierno (University of Southern Denmark) and Andrea Révész (University of Lancaster) will be participating as invited speakers.

The workshop is organized by the doctoral students in the Applied Linguistics Ph.D. Program at the University of Barcelona and supported by the EuroSLA Workshop Grant Programme. It is addressed to doctoral students and young researchers involved in SLA research, who are encouraged to participate by submitting a paper based on their work in progress which includes a mixed-methods component. During the workshop discussion and constructive feedback of Ph.D. student papers will be led by senior researchers.

Call for Papers:

We welcome empirically-based studies as well as methodological and theoretical papers. Empirical research should include a combination of qualitative and quantitative data collection and/or analysis procedures (naturalistic, elicited or experimental data). The workshop is open to research on any perspective in SLA (interactionist, variationist, sociocultural, etc.) and the following broad areas of research:

- Language in context (i.e., interactionist, variationist, sociocultural, etc.)
- Linguistics and sociolinguistics (i.e. morphosyntax, vocabulary, pragmatics, etc.)
- Psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics (i.e., processing, frequency-based accounts, etc.)
- Skill learning (i.e., reading, speaking, perception, language assessment, etc.)
- Individual differences (i.e., motivation, aptitude, age, identity etc.)
- The setting of learning (i.e., classroom research, study abroad, technology etc.)

Submission Guidelines:

The review of the abstracts will be conducted anonymously and will be evaluated in terms of the: 1. relevance/appropriateness of the topic in relation to the theme of the conference; 2. quality of theoretical orientation, originality and design of the research (if applicable); 3. overall quality. Each author may submit one individual abstract and one abstract in a co-authorship. A submission should include a title (15 words maximum), an abstract (300 words maximum, excluding references), and a brief summary for the conference program (50 words maximum). Name, affiliation, and email address should be provided on a separate page. The language of the workshop is predominantly English, but contributions in other European languages will also be considered. However, abstracts should be submitted only in English.
