Call for Papers:

We invite papers from any subdivision of cognitive science such as formal linguistics, language acquisition, neurolinguistics, phonetics, philosophy, psychology, etc. We also encourage diversity in methods so we welcome both formal and experimental approaches to the topic of weight in phonology and phonetics.

The following list of questions is meant to be suggestive and provocative. The organizers wish to emphasize that the field of discussion for the conference is open to all matters related to weight in phonology, phonetics, psycholinguistics, poetics, etc. In short, submissions are invited from within a broad penumbra of the study of the segment.

- What phenomena is weight supposed to explain?
- Does the same concept of weight apply to all the various domains for which it has been proposed?
- Is weight derived or is it a distinctive unit in its own right?
- How is weight derived, if indeed it is?
- How does phonological weight relate to phonetic weight (and vice versa, and assuming this is a valid question)?
- What aspects of weight are referred to by morphological and phonological rules/constraints?
- Do the phenomena for which weight has been proposed represent broader aspects of cognition beyond phonetics and phonology?
- Do the phenomena for which weight has been proposed occur in other animals?
- What is the neural representation of weight?

Submission Guidelines:

We invite both oral presentations and posters. Abstracts should consist of a one page description of the paper (12pt font) with a second page for references, data and/or illustrations; please specify if you wish a poster, an oral presentation, or don’t care which. Talks will be 20 minutes with 10 minutes for discussion. Abstracts should be emailed as an attachment (PDF format) to weight at cunyphonologyforum.net no later than midnight, September 13, 2013. Authors should include title of the paper, name of the author(s) and affiliation in the body of the email.

Important Dates and Information:

September 13, 2013: Deadline for abstracts submission
October 18, 2013: Notification of acceptance
January 15-17, 2014: Conference on weight in phonetics and phonology
