Meeting Description:

BioNLP 2013
http://compbio.ucdenver.edu/BioNLP2013/index.shtml

BioNLP 2013 is the twelfth workshop on biomedical natural language processing being held in conjunction with the annual ACL or NAACL meeting. BioNLP 2013 will be held at the ACL 2013 meeting in Sofia, Bulgaria, under the auspices of SIGBIOMED, the ACL’s special interest group for biomedical natural language processing. The meeting will be held August 8-9, 2013.

The second day of the meeting will be devoted to the BioNLP Shared Task 2013 (BioNLP-ST 2013). Please see the BioNLP-ST 2013 website for further information.

The meeting will feature a keynote speech by Dr. Galia Angelova of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Call for Papers

Over the course of the past eleven years, the ACL BioNLP workshop associated with the SIGBIOMED special interest group has established itself as the primary venue for presenting foundational research in language processing for the biological and medical domains. The workshop serves as both a venue for bringing together researchers in biological and clinical NLP and exposing these researchers to the mainstream ACL research, and a venue for informing the mainstream ACL researchers about this fast-growing and important domain.

The workshop will continue presenting work on a broad and interesting range of topics in NLP. Along with accepting submissions this year on any topic of current interest in the field, we will encourage submissions on theoretical aspects of biomedical language processing.

We especially encourage submissions on:

- Entity identification and normalization for a broad range of semantic categories
- Species-independent gene normalization
- Extraction of complex relations
- Discourse analysis
- Anaphora resolution
- Coreference resolution
- Text mining
- Summarization
- Question answering
- Resources and novel strategies for system testing and evaluation
- Hybrid approaches to biomedical language processing
- Processing and annotation platforms
- Translation of basic linguistic research to clinical care
- Domain adaptation
- Temporality
- Theoretical underpinnings of biomedical natural language processing

Important Dates:

Submission deadline: Friday, April 26, 2013
Notification of acceptance: Friday, May 24, 2013
Camera-ready copy due from authors: Friday, June 7, 2013
Workshop: August 8-9, 2013

Submission Instructions:

Two types of submissions are invited: full papers and posters. Submissions are due by 11:59 PM EST on Friday, April 26, 2013. Please submit your paper via the ACL START site for BioNLP 2013:

https://www.softconf.com/acl2013/BioNLP2013/

Full papers should not exceed eight (8) pages of text and one page of references. These are intended to be reports of original research. BioNLP aims to be the forum for interesting, innovative, and promising work involving biomedicine and language technology, whether or not yielding high performance at the moment. This by no means precludes our interest in and preference for mature results, strong performance, and thorough evaluation. Both types of research and combinations thereof are encouraged.

Poster abstracts should not exceed four (4) pages including references. Accepted poster abstracts will be published in a separate section of the workshop proceedings. Appropriate poster topics include preliminary results, application notes, descriptions of work in progress, etc.

Submissions must be electronic and in PDF format, and should follow the two-column format of ACL proceedings. Please see the conference website for details. Authors are strongly encouraged to use the style files and formatting instructions available on the conference website:

http://acl2013.org/site/call.html (scroll down)

Submissions need to be anonymous. Authors who cannot submit a PDF file electronically should contact the workshop organizers well in advance of the submission deadline.

Submissions for the BioNLP-ST 2013 Shared Task:

Submissions for the BioNLP-ST 2013 shared task are handled separately and should be submitted through the website at http://2013.bionlp-st.org/.

Dual Submission Policy:

Note that papers may NOT be submitted to the BioNLP 2013 workshop if they are or will be concurrently submitted to another meeting or publication.
