Meeting Description:

IATEFL Learner Autonomy Special Interest Group (LASIG)
Local conference, 27-28 September 2013
Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany

Learner Autonomy in Second Language Pedagogy and Research - Challenges and Issues

Why is it so difficult to convince learners, teachers, parents, and institutions of the benefits of learner autonomy? Why is ‘learner autonomy’ often perceived as an ‘added component’ or a ‘waste of time’ rather than an integral part of language learning? How can these obstacles be overcome in contexts ranging from primary or secondary school contexts up to languages for specific purposes programmes and adult education?

Four internationally acclaimed researchers and practitioners in the field of learner autonomy will address this vital question in their plenary talks:

David Little, Trinity College, Dublin
Leni Dam, IATEFL LASIG coordinator, Denmark
Lienhard Legenhausen, University of Münster, Germany
Elisabet Arnó Macià, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya
Escola Politècnica Superior d’Enginyeria de Vilanova i la Geltrú (EPSEVG), Spain

Apart from the four plenaries, there will be several rounds of parallel talks and workshops.

Call for Papers:

Talks should be 20 minutes plus 10 minutes Q&A, and workshops 60 minutes, with a short input from the speaker and concrete tasks for the participants to carry out. The contributions should focus on issues in language teaching and learning which have been successfully addressed by implementing aspects of a pedagogy for autonomy. We are looking forward to contributions from primary, secondary and tertiary sectors.

Submission of proposals: February 15 - May 15, 2013

Please note that booking and payment for the conference can only be processed through IATEFL (please go to http://secure.iatefl.org/events/event.php?id=59).
