Dissertation Abstract:

This study investigated the effectiveness of a proposed Islamic –Arabic-culture-
based programme in developing English language listening and reading
comprehension skills of third year students at Al-Azhar preparatory institutes.
The sample of the present study involved thirty-one female students from Al-
Badrasheen Preparatory Institute (as an experimental group) and thirty-one
female students from Al-Omrania Preparatory Institute (as a control group). The
study also aimed to test the change that is expected to occur for students'
attitudes towards learning English as a result of applying the proposed
programme. A listening reading comprehension checklist and a pre-post listening
and reading comprehension test were used as tools of the present study, in
addition to a pre-post attitude scale. Based on the results of the study, it was
clearly shown that the proposed Islamic–Arabic-culture -based programme was
very effective in developing EFL listening and reading comprehension as well as
attitudes of third-year preparatory students at Al-Azhar institutes towards the
subject . Most of the students got satisfactory results. The literal comprehension
skills were developed better than inferential and critical comprehension skills.
