Description:

Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in Voice Biomechanics and Acoustics Laboratory Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at Michigan State University.

Applications are invited for up to two one-year postdoctoral positions at the Vocal Biomechanics and Acoustics Laboratory at Michigan State Univ. Depending on productivity and a candidate’s desire to grow independent research, the position will allow for additional years. This position is part of a larger funded project to study gender specific speech production techniques in high voice use occupations. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing written/oral presentations for journal publications and conferences. The researcher will also assist with helping to plan/conduct experiments, including speech production and vocal fatigue experiments. Additional experiments will include room acoustic characterization.  Evidence of scholarly productivity in the form of journal articles, conference proceedings, and/or conference presentations is mandatory. Additional responsibilities will include oversight of undergraduate and graduate students working on the project.
 
A requirement for the position is good familiarity with the published literature on processes in speech production and acoustical analysis techniques. An additional requirement is a solid understanding of laboratory speech recording techniques or expertise in recording bio-signals.  In addition, a strong preference will be given to applicants with good familiarity with the published literature on voice problems in occupational voice users and understanding of room acoustics. Other desired skills include experience or exposure to statistical methods, signal processing, speech perception, computer scripting (e.g. MATLAB, PRAAT scripts, Python), and comfort with equipment.

A Ph.D. degree is required for this position; preference may be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in hand.  Relevant areas for the Ph.D. are Acoustics, Engineering, Bioengineering, Speech and Hearing Science, Psychology, and Linguistics. The successful candidate will have excellent organization and communication skills and strong personal motivation. Background and experience with submission of manuscripts to scholarly journals is desirable; other desirable skills include training in acoustic analysis of speech segments and/or speech prosody, computer programming skills, and/or music performance and/or theory. English language proficiency required. The salary range is will depend on applicant’s incoming skill set. The position includes health coverage per Michigan State University procedures.
