FRIAS - the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies - and the Max-Planck-Institute of Evolutionary Anthropology (Leipzig) proudly announce the availability of an updated version of eWAVE.

eWAVE - the electronic World Atlas of Varieties of English, edited by Bernd Kortmann and Kerstin Lunkenheimer, is an interactive database on morphosyntactic variation in spontaneous spoken English, which was designed and compiled at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) and the English Department of the University of Freiburg, Germany and first released in November 2011. It is now available with a new, even more user-friendly interface and an updated and considerably expanded database.

New features include:
- two completely new datasets (Philippine English and Cape Flats English);
- updated ratings for a number of existing datasets;
- a record of changes for updated data points;
- more than 2,400 new examples;
- a comprehensive list of references;
- improved navigation;
- new, user-friendly search and filtering functions;
- new download options.

eWAVE maps 235 features from a dozen domains of grammar in now 50 varieties of English (traditional dialects, high-contact mother-tongue Englishes, and indigenized second-language Englishes) and 26 English-based Pidgins and Creoles in eight Anglophone world regions (Africa, Asia, Australia, British Isles, Caribbean, North America, Pacific, and the South Atlantic).

Visit www.ewave-atlas.org now and explore the global-scale patterns of morphosyntactic variation in English:
- View morphosyntactic profiles of dozens of varieties of English and English-based Pidgins and Creoles from all over the world.
- Use interactive maps to explore patterns of distribution of individual features across varieties, variety types and regions.
- Filter results by variety type, region, or pervasiveness of the feature.
- View examples from a wide range of varieties for each of the 235 morphosyntactic features in the database.
- Search among more than 4,000 example sentences for forms that you are interested in, and find out which other varieties use the same feature.
- Export filtered maps and tables in various formats.

Partly designed and entirely programmed in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (Leipzig), where it is also hosted, eWAVE 2.0 uses the same architecture as the MPI's other linguistic databases, such as WALS (http://wals.info) and APiCS (http://apics-online.info), thus facilitating comparison across these databases.

The updated eWAVE can now be accessed at www.ewave-atlas.org.
