Description:

The University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science and the Arts seeks a highly motivated individual with a strong background in English for Academic Purposes and/or applied linguistics and experience in higher education  to serve as Director of the English Language Institute (ELI).  The English Language Institute was established at the University of Michigan in 1941 with a small grant from the Rockefeller Foundation as the first English language research and teaching program of its kind in the United States.  Since its founding, the ELI has been a leader in language teaching and learning at the University of Michigan and throughout the world.  The ELI's mission now centers on providing a range of courses in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) for international graduate students and visiting scholars at the University of Michigan, in support of the University's global learning and engagement initiatives. The Director of the ELI will be responsible for planning and directing the development, implementation, and administration of all teaching programs, services, and initiatives for the English Language Institute, with the opportunity to teach.   The Director will provide vision, leadership, and strategic direction to refine the ELI curriculum focusing especially on the teaching of international graduate students, outreach and service learning courses, and programs for visiting scholars.  The Director will develop and manage the ELI budget, supervise ELI staff and oversee faculty reviews.   

PhD preferred, in applied linguistics as broadly construed or in a related field with specialization in applied linguistics, especially genre theory and corpus linguistics, English for Academic Purposes (EAP) pedagogy, and/or EAP curriculum and materials development.  Candidates should have substantial prior experience teaching EAP as well as significant program administration experience in a complex academic environment.  Candidates should also demonstrate: ability to relate effectively to a wide range of people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures; excellent communication in English; experience with budgeting, controlling costs, planning, and scheduling.
