Meeting Description:

The 6th Austrian Students’ Conference of Linguistics will take place from 29 November until 1 December 2013 in Vienna.

This conference offers students of linguistics and language sciences the possibility to give an account of their own research in the form of an oral presentation (20 minutes plus 10 minutes discussion) to other students. It provides the opportunity to share and discuss research results and ideas amongst peers, to get input and feedback for one’s projects and give a presentation in a professional context. Students of linguistics from all academic backgrounds (language departments and departments of linguistics alike) are invited to attend the conference in order to collaborate and broaden their understanding of languages and language. Dissertations, Master’s and Bachelor’s theses as well as presentations of projects or term papers are welcome. Presentations can be held in either English or German.

The conference opens on Friday 29 November. In the evening, there will be an informal get-together for socialising and getting to know each other. To kick-off the conference two experienced researchers will give a keynote lecture before students will present their work on Saturday 30 November and Sunday 1 December. The conference will take place in the Departments for German Studies and Linguistics. 

Conference Details:

All participants are responsible for their own accommodation. However, we will upload some suggestions and recommended hostels, hotels, etc. that are close to Campus onto our homepage (see below) in due course. If you are currently living in Vienna and would be able and willing to accommodate presenters from out of town, please let us know via email. If you will be coming in from out of town and would prefer private accommodation, please do likewise (although we cannot, of course, make any promises).

2nd Call for Papers:

Extended deadline: October 21, 2013

The Austrian Students' Conference in Linguistic is an international conference for graduate and undergraduate students in linguistics and related fields. Individuals working in all areas of linguistics and the language sciences are welcome to submit.

For your application, please send the (preliminary) title of your presentation and an abstract (100-200 words) in English or German (doc, docx or PDF) to oeskl2013 at gmail.com by October 21, 2013 Please include your contact information and name only in the email itself since the applications will be assessed in anonymised form in accordance with the principle of blind reviewing. 

To allow us to organise the presentations into thematic sessions, we ask you to also provide the following information in tabellaric form along with your abstract:

1. General field of linguistic enquiry (e.g. phonology/phonetics, pragmatics, semantics, syntax, socio-linguistics, discourse, historical linguistics, etc.)
2. Underlying/related theories (e.g. generative grammar, cognitive grammar, discourse analysis, etc.) 
3. Research set-up and methodology (empirical (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods), theoretical, applied, literature review)
4. Language specificity (general language theory, language specific → state relevant language(s), comparative/contrastive → state relevant languages)
5. Approximate scope of your research (term project, seminar paper, BA thesis, MA thesis, PhD thesis etc.)

In addition, you may also include up to five preliminary key references to further indicate the prospective orientation of your research.
