Meeting Description:

Word Formation and Transparency in Medical English

Seminar at the 12th ESSE Conference, 29 August- 2 September 2014, Košice (Slovakia)

Convenors:

Pius ten Hacken, Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck, Austria
Renáta Panocová, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, Slovakia

Background:

As a side effect of the rapid progress in medical research and of the emergence of new medical conditions, medicine is a domain where new concepts have to be named more frequently than in many other domains. Because of the prominent position of English in medical research, most of these concepts are first named in English. This seminar will consider naming strategies used for these concepts from the perspectives of how transparent the resulting names are for practitioners and the general public and how they create problems for translation into other languages.

Call for Papers:

We invite abstracts for presentations about issues in the general field described above. In particular, we hope to get submissions that address the following questions:

- What are the naming devices used for new concepts in specific areas of medical English?
- What are the advantages and drawbacks of particular naming devices for different types English-speaking user (e.g. researchers, doctors, patients, …)
- What are the advantages and drawbacks of particular naming devices for translation into other languages

Abstracts should be between 300 and 400 words in length (excluding any bibliography). They should be sent to pius.ten-hacken at uibk.ac.at and renata.panocova at upjs.sk.

Important Dates:

8 February 2014: Deadline for submission of abstracts
31 March 2014: Notification of acceptance to the authors
29 Augut - 2 September 2014: Conference

Participants in the workshop have to register for the ESSE conference and pay the conference fee. ESSE does not allow participants to give more than one presentation at the conference. All presentations, whether single-autored or co-authored, oral or poster count as one presentation.
