Description:

Saarland University is a campus university with an international focus and a distinctive research profile.

The Faculty of Linguistics, Literary and Cultural Studies (Humanities II) at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany invites applications for a tenured Full Professor (pay scale W3) in Computational Linguistics (reference number W785) starting on October 1st, 2014. The position is located in the department of Computational Linguistics and Phonetics (FR 4.7, Allgemeine Linguistik).

The successful candidate will be an internationally distinguished expert in the linguistic foundations of natural language processing, as demonstrated by excellence in computational modelling at (one or more of) the lexical, sentence or discourse/dialog level. Demonstrated ability to combine symbolic and distributional approaches is also desired. The department participates actively in the Center of Excellence for Multimodal Computing and Interaction and is involved in many national and international research projects and initiatives. Experience in acquiring external funding and in leading research projects is therefore crucial. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the university‘s research profile, both at the department and the faculty as well as across faculties (e. g., collaboration with applied linguistics and computer science), and to participate in large-scale coordinated projects. Cooperation with partners within the international SaarLorLux region is expected and will be supported.

The position comes with the 9 hrs/semester teaching duties of tenured professorships. The successful candidate will teach core courses and specialization courses in the department's M.Sc. and B.Sc. programs and contribute to the further development of these programs. As the B.Sc. courses are taught in German, applicants should have a working knowledge in German or be willing to acquire it rather quickly. The international M.Sc. courses are taught in English.

Employment requirements are a doctoral degree, teaching experience, and an excellent academic record. In the German university system this usually means a habilitation or equivalent academic achievements. Applicants are requested to submit their application, together with an academic CV, a record of their teaching experience, a list of academic publications, and copies of academic degree certificates.

The deadline for application is November 21st, 2013.

Saarland University is an equal opportunity employer. Applications of women are strongly encouraged for this type of position; applications of disabled persons will be given preferential treatment to those of other candidates with equal qualifications.

Applications should be sent to the application email address below.
