Description:

The Department of Chinese of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for two positions, one Associate and one Assistant Professor of Chinese Literature / Chinese Linguistics.

The Department of Chinese is an established and distinguished scholarly community with a strong international profile comprising literature and linguistics. In addition to its undergraduate BA programme in Chinese Studies (including Chinese Literature and Chinese Linguistics), the department offers MA programmes in Chinese Literature and in Chinese Linguistics, as well as PhD supervision across the range of the department’s expertise. In literature the department has particular strengths in classical and modern Chinese literature and studies of traditional Chinese cultural. In linguistics the department has particular strengths in Chinese syntax, dialectology and sociolinguistics. 

Applications in all areas of Chinese literature or Chinese linguistics will be considered, but those with specializations in the areas of comparative literature, new literature in Chinese, classic Chinese language and/or theoretical linguistics will be particularly welcome. The department seeks to appoint an Associate Professor who is achieving international recognition for their research (with potential for outstanding research recognized internationally) and has an excellent record of teaching and research supervision. The department also seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor with clear research potential that has been recognized internationally and some teaching experience.

Qualifications:
Applicants must hold a PhD in Chinese Literature / Chinese Linguistics or in related areas. Applicants should have an excellent record of tertiary teaching and supervision experience and a distinguished record of research and publication at an international level. 

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2014.

Position and Remuneration:
Remuneration and appointment rank offered will be competitive and commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification, current position and professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
