Meeting Description:

VAKKI Symposium operates in the fields of translation, LSP and multilingualism as well as fields in close proximity to them, providing researchers with an international and multilingual meeting place.

The keynote speakers and the provisional titles of their speeches are:

Professor Mikko Lehtonen (University of Tampere, Finland), Democracy, language, imagination
Docent Tommi Lehtonen (University of Vaasa, Finland), What is this thing called democracy?

The symposium also features the nomination of Humanist of the Year 2014.

Participation fee is 100 €. The fee includes program, lunch and coffee on both days and a copy of the symposium publication.

2nd Call for Papers:

The annual symposium of the University of Vaasa Research Group of Translation, LSP and Multilingualism VAKKI is arranged on Feb 13–14, 2014, with the theme Democracy. We welcome papers dealing with language and democracy from varied points of view, for example: 

- Democracy as a subject of study
- Multilingualism and democracy
- Translation, interpreting and democracy
- Discourses of democracy in literature
- Democratic dimensions of LSP
- Democracy in interaction
- Functionality and dysfunctionality of democracy
- Democracy and the discourses of media
- The future of democracy

In addition to these, we welcome papers within the research fields of VAKKI. 

Participants can contribute with a presentation (20 min + 5 min discussion) or a poster (minimum size ca. 60 cm x 84 cm). The presentations will be compiled into a double blind refereed symposium volume which will be published in printed and electronic open access form. The working languages of the symposium are Finnish, Swedish, English and German.

Please submit your presentation and poster abstracts (max. 300 words) as an attachment (in .doc or .rtf format) to symposium2014 [at] vakki.net before Dec 2, 2013. In the message you should also mention your name, affiliation, and whether you are going to contribute with a presentation or a poster. Also mention if you are presenting together with someone. The papers will be selected based on the scientific quality of the abstract. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by Dec 20, 2013. Participants should register for the symposium electronically Dec 16, 2013−Jan 17, 2014.
