Meeting Description:

The Contragram Research Team and its Research network on Contrastive Linguistics: Functional and Constructional Approaches (funded by FWO-Flanders) are pleased to invite you to the International Symposium on Contrastive Linguistics & Diachrony, to be held at Ghent University on 27-28 February 2014. This symposium is aimed at bringing together researchers from different theoretical backgrounds interested in issues at the intersection of diachronic and contrastive linguistics. The symposium will specifically address the following complementary questions:

(i) To what extent does a better understanding of diachronic evolutions explain differences between languages, whether genetically related or not, and conversely
(ii) To what extent does the incorporation of data from several languages in research on language change provide a better understanding of diachronic evolutions.

2nd Call for Papers:

If you have not submitted an abstract to CoLiDi 2014, please note that the deadline for submission has been extended for an extra two weeks until Monday, 16 September 2013.

The symposium welcomes papers dealing with the diachronic study of a broad range of themes in at least two languages. Contributions from within any theoretical framework are welcomed. Priority will be given to papers with a firm empirical basis that can lead a better understanding of similarities and differences in the diachronic evolution of languages.
 
Possible topics of interest include: 

- The correlation between phonological or morphological change and syntactic change
- Methodological issues in reconstructing syntax and grammar 
- Synchronic variation as a reflection of diachronic change 
- Patterns of contact-induced change 
- Gradualness in linguistic change 
- The emergence and schematization of new constructions ('constructionalization') across languages
- Grammaticalization (and degrammaticalization) paths and grammaticalization paces
- The roles of and relationship between analogy and reanalysis in linguistic change
- The syntactic or semantic evolution of cognates or lexical equivalents 
- Syntactic or semantic evolutions in functionally and/or formally related grammatical patterns from several languages
- Semantic change and patterns of polysemy across languages 

Submission Guidelines: 

Abstracts are invited for 20-minute presentations (with subsequent discussion time of 10 minutes). Submissions must be made through the EasyChair system, which may be accessed at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=colidi2014, no later than 16 September 2013.
 
Abstracts must be anonymous throughout and should not exceed 500 words, excluding references. Submissions are limited to two per individual, at least one of which must be co-authored.
 
Notifications of acceptance will be sent by 30 September 2013.
