Rhizomes VIII International Postgraduate Conference
10-11 February 2014

Surviving and Thriving in Multilingual Spaces

The School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies at the University of Queensland is pleased to announce the 2014 Rhizomes Conference.
 
Multilingual contexts are spaces in which cultures, languages and literatures can meet, negotiate identities and provide opportunities as well as obstacles for intercultural understanding. This conference will explore the struggle to reconcile tradition with innovation, cultural identity and language with the persistent influence of global power relations.

The Conference welcomes postgraduate and early career researchers, providing a stimulating intellectual environment for the presentation of current research in the interdisciplinary fields of language, linguistics, literature and cultural studies.

Call for Papers:

Submission topics can include, but are not limited to:

- Linguistics and applied linguistics: Language policy and planning, second language acquisition, translation and interpreting, language and technology, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics
- Literary studies: Film and media studies, gender and queer studies, postcolonial studies
- Cultural studies: Indigenous studies, migration studies, intercultural and cross-cultural studies, peace and conflict studies

Format:

Presentations must be no longer than twenty minutes in length, with ten additional minutes set aside for discussion. Presentations will be grouped into panels of three according to topic.

Deadline:

Abstracts of no more than 250 words and written in English (including 4-5 keywords) are to be submitted by email to the address below by Friday, 20 September 2013. Submissions should be written in English and be 250 words maximum. Please include a 150-word biography of the speaker as well as the speaker's institutional affiliation.
