Meeting Description:

The fourth bi-annual conference on Current Approaches to Spanish and Portuguese Second Language Phonology (CASPSLaP) will be held at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, March 14-16, 2014. The presentations will include a wide range of contexts, from acquisition of Spanish phonology by English speakers to the acquisition of Portuguese phonology by Spanish speakers; from classroom-based learning to full immersion in the culture of the second language; and all other related topics. By focusing on the breadth of approaches that scholars are taking to the study of second language phonological acquisition in Spanish and Portuguese, this conference aims to represent the state-of-the-art in second language phonological acquisition.

The conference features plenary speaker Joan Bybee (University of New Mexico), workshops on dialectal variation and event related potentials, and a special interactive pedagogy-focused session on best practices in classroom pronunciation instruction. The conference is held in concert with the Georgetown University Round Table on Languages and Linguistics (GURT). The theme of GURT 2014 is Usage-based and Cognitive Approaches to Language Learning and Multilingualism. The plenary speakers include Elissa Newport, Adele Goldberg, Nick Ellis and Elena Lieven.

2nd Call for Papers:

Though this conference will highlight usage-based approaches, abstracts are invited for presentations and posters on any topic related to the second language acquisition of the Spanish and Portuguese sound systems as well as the pedagogy-focused session (see below for special guidelines). Anonymous one-page abstracts, with a second page allowed for references and/or examples, should be submitted to http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/CASPSLaP2014 by October 1, 2013. Abstracts may be submitted as Word or PDF documents. Please embed any special fonts. Each author may submit at most one abstract as sole author and one jointly authored abstract. Submissions for the pedagogy-focused session do not count against this total.

We also solicit submissions for an interactive pedagogy-focused session in which participants will present brief (10 minute) micro-teaching lessons in a rotating “speed-dating” format (variably known as “speed geeking”, ‘lightning talks”, or PechaKucha). These lessons should showcase a specific pedagogical technique or activity to teach a particular sound or process, or to help learners overcome a particular problem. Such lessons may be aimed at students enrolled in courses specifically treating pronunciation/phonetics or for learners in more general language course. The session will begin with a brief introduction to the topic by the organizers, followed by one hour of “speed-dating” presentations. Upon the conclusion of the micro-lessons, attendees will have time to converse with presenters and other attendees before the organizers conclude the session. Participants and attendees will leave the session with a packet of materials to take back to their classrooms. Submissions should include a detailed lesson plan of at least a title of lesson, statement of objectives, summary of task(s), description of materials (if possible providing a provisional/preliminary version of these), the activity itself, and later follow up (like other activities, homework and/or assessments), and any references. Submissions will be accepted at through http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/CASPSLaP2014 until October 1, 2013.
