Description:

We seek to appoint to the position of a researcher in the Leverhulme Research Leadership Award Project “Crossroads – investigating the unexplored side of multilingualism” led by Dr. Friederike Lüpke.

You will be an experienced fieldworking linguist of postdoctoral standing to join a dynamic interdisciplinary research group working on social networks and communities of practice and their impact on language structure and use in three multilingual village communities in Casamance, Southern Senegal.

You will conduct corpus-based research, using existing corpora and descriptions, and field research activities on Gujoolay Eegimaa (Joola Banjal). You will identify areas of convergence and divergence in a number of linguistic domains between this language and the contact languages Joola Kujirerai and Baïnounk Gubëeher based on corpus data and investigate the type and frequency of convergences in language use in social networks and communities of practice of speakers.

You will also conduct field research and be a field mentor to two PhD students working on the sociolinguistic and ethnographic aspects of social networks and communities of practice, and you will engage in a range of training activities for members of the village communities. Three field stays of ca. three months duration each are scheduled.

The following skills are essential:
- Fieldwork experience of at least 6 month duration in a rural setting, ideally in Africa
- Demonstrated evidence of developing innovative field- and or corpus-based methodologies and experience of collecting and analysing data based on these methodologies, as evidenced in publications or the doctoral thesis
- Good knowledge of the lexicon and parsing tools FLEX or Toolbox and of the annotation tool ELAN
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
- Good oral and written communication skills in French

A Ph.D. in linguistics (submitted at the closing date and defended by December 2013, with written evidence from the awarding university provided with the application) or a related field is required.

Applications should include a CV, an outline of research experience and how it could benefit the Leverhulme project, and two letters of reference, one of them from the primary doctoral supervisor.

References should be emailed by the referees using the official letterhead of the university to the application email address below by the closing date.

Interviews will be held during week commencing 11 November 2013.

SOAS values diversity and aims to be an equal opportunities employer.
