Abstract:

Herausgegeben im Auftrag der Ost-West-Gesellschaft für Sprach- und
Kulturforschung, Berlin Dieses Buch stellt den Sinologen und Sprachforscher
Georg von der Gabelentz (1840−1893), seine wissenschaftliche Arbeit und seine
Familiengeschichte einem breiten Publikum vor. Gabelentz stammt aus einer
Adelsfamilie auf Poschwitz (Altenburg, Thüringen). Er war der Sohn des damals
weltweit bekannten Sprachforschers und Staatsmannes, Hans Conon von der
Gabelentz (1807–1874). Kernstück des Buches ist ein von Gabelentz’ jüngerer
Schwester, Clementine von Münchhausen, hinterlassenes Manuskript »H. Georg v.
d. Gabelentz. Biographie und Charakteristik«, das hier erstmals komplett
veröffentlicht wird. Ergänzt wird das Manuskript durch eine detaillierte, 1938
als Faksimile der Handschrift gedruckte familiengeschichtliche Darstellung des
alten Adelsgeschlechtes. Zusammen mit Bildern und Dokumenten aus der
Gabelentz-Ausstellung der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin von 2010 werden fünf
Arbeiten von Fachwissenschaftlern und Forschern zu Gabelentz’ Leben als
Wissenschaftler, Auszüge aus seinen Hauptwerken sowie seine scharfsinnigen
»Sentenzen«, die privat überliefert sind, abgedruckt. So ist der Band ein
unterhaltsames, vielseitiges, primäres Quellenbuch für alle diejenigen, die
