Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track position in the study of language variation at the rank of Assistant Professor.  The position will begin on July 1, 2014. The successful candidate must have the Ph.D. completed before taking the position.

The Department is interested in the general study of language variation, which includes change and variation across languages and dialects as well as in a single speech community. The topics of investigation are also broad, within the domain of sociolinguistics, sociophonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, multilingualism, experimental linguistics etc.  Regardless of the specialization and methodology, the successful candidate should demonstrate ability to initiate original research in language variation that contributes to our understanding of the language faculty. 

The applicant should present a proven record of research and the potential for establishing a research program with extramural funding.  The successful candidate must also provide evidence of excellence in teaching, and will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate instruction including introductory level courses.
