The School of English seeks to appoint a Lecturer or Associate Professor in English Language with research and teaching interests in the social and historical study of the language. You will be an active researcher in English Studies with a focus on any of the following: the study of varieties of English, including dialects and Englishes; the study of the socio-cultural history of English in a particular period; corpus-based historical and/or sociolinguistic research. You will be an active researcher able to enhance and extend the School’s considerable strengths across a broad curriculum, and will work closely with colleagues in the newly-configured English language group (Tony Crowley, Fiona Douglas, Christiana Gregoriou, Alison Johnson). In addition, you will have the opportunity to engage in new developments in research collaboration both within the School, such as Digital Humanities, and with colleagues across the University in fields such as Translation Studies, Linguistics and Phonetics, Computing and Education. These links will be fostered by the recently established major Faculty strategic initiative Language at Leeds.

You will have a record of regular publication, recognised as being of the highest standards nationally and internationally and you will be an excellent teacher who will participate in the School’s mission of inspiring our students. You will contribute to a range of teaching and learning across programmes and at all levels, working to ensure the highest quality student experience. You will be expected to develop innovative, research-led teaching and to contribute to the Single Honours degree in English Language and Literature and the Joint Honours degree in English Language and Linguistics; MA teaching and PhD supervision will also be required.

You will have a PhD in English Language or Linguistics; excellent interpersonal and communication abilities; excellent administrative and time-management skills and good IT skills, with experience in Word, email, and Power Point. You will be required to undertake appropriate academic administrative responsibilities, pending discussion with the Head of School.

University Grade 8 (£37,382 - £44,607 p.a.) or University Grade 9 (£45,941 - £53,233 p.a.)
