The seminar Semantics of Evaluative Morphology will be held within the academic program of the 12th ESSE Conference, 29 August - 2 September 2014 in Kosice, Slovakia.

The Semantics of Evaluative Morphology (SEM) seminar aims to discuss the possibilities of a universal semantic model of EM and the specificity of the semantics of evaluative morphology in various individual languages.

When Scalise (1984) introduced the notion of Evaluative Morphology (EM) he  initiated a discussion that ranged from enthusiastic welcome to skeptical rejection. During the last 30 years the concept of EM has been discussed from various angles and in various languages. However, one of the most challenging issues in EM is left almost untouched. With the exception of e.g. Jurafsky (1996), Prieto (2005) and Wierzbiczka (1996), linguists rather prefer to focus on formal aspects of EM. In accordance with Jurafsky's  (1996) long-standing desideratum, we aim to discuss the possibilities of a universal semantic model in EM. This theoretical discussion is aimed at various approaches to the semantics of EM, the range of cognitive categories covered by EM, as well as their possible realizations. At the same time, we have the ambition to discuss the semantics of EM in individual languages that might support but also contradict any of the suggested universal models. 

Call for Papers:

We invite 300-word abstracts on any of the raised theoretical questions or on the discussion of the semantics of evaluative morphology in individual languages. The abstracts should be sent to one of the following email addresses: livia.kortvelyessy at upjs.sk; abagasheva at gmail.com.
