Linguistic Field(s): Morphology

Meeting Description:

The workshop 'Productivity in word-formation' will be held within the 12th ESSE conference in KOŠICE, Slovakia.

Convenors:
Mark Aronoff, Stony Brook University, New York, USA
Pavol Štekauer, P.J. Šafárik University, Košice, Slovakia

Productivity and constraints on productivity have been central topics of word-formation especially since Aronoff (1976). Ever since, a number of significant publications have emerged regularly (cf. Bauer 2005, Rainer 2005 and Aronoff and Lindsay, to appear, for mapping the state-of-the-art in the field).

Much of the general linguistic work on morphological productivity, especially in word formation, has been based on English data, in large part because of the availability of electronic tools and materials on English that are not available for any other language, especially the OED in various electronic formats.

Extensive research in this area has not only brought new ideas and theories but also indicated a range of problems. Furthermore, a number of new topics have come to the foreground. The seminar aims to concentrate on the following topics:

- Methods of computing productivity
- Form-based vs. cognitively founded approaches to productivity
- Productivity as competition between word-formation processes / rules; affix rivalry
- Discrete vs. scalar notions of productivity
- Constraints on productivity
- Actual, potential, possible, probable words
- Sociolinguistic factors influencing the productivity of word-formation rules
