Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for two Visiting Assistant Professor positions for the 2014-2015 academic year, with a target start date of August 16, 2014. PhD must be in hand by the start date.  The positions will be full-time (2 courses per semester), nine month appointments, paid over twelve months.  Salary will be commensurate with experience. The successful candidates will teach graduate and undergraduate courses related to the MATESL degree, courses in relevant areas of second language studies, and/or ESL courses.

Position 1: Primary teaching responsibility related to Applied/Pedagogical Phonology and Morphology for TESL, with other courses to be determined in consultation with the head of the department. 

Position 2: Primary teaching responsibility for this candidate will relate to language testing, with other courses to be determined in consultation with the head of the department. 

The MATESL program is the oldest existing MATESL program in the US and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2015.  ESL has been taught at Illinois since 1947.  Illinois is a leader in international student education and has the largest international student population of any public university in the nation, with over 9,800 international students representing 115 countries (14% of the student body).  The Department of Linguistics serves the needs of our international NNS by offering approximately 60 sections of ESL per semester, including pronunciation, 7 levels of ESL writing at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and courses for our International Teaching Assistant population. 

Minimum Qualifications
- A PhD in hand by the beginning of appointment, with specialization in Applied Linguistics, Second Language Studies, ESL/ELL/TESOL, or a related field;
- Demonstrated evidence of research including a publication record and an active research agenda related to the position;
- A minimum of two years of experience teaching ESL/EFL or related courses;
- Evidence of excellence in teaching

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in teacher education related to field of application;
- Evidence of successful second language learning;
- Experience related to computers and language learning and/or technology-enhanced research;
- International work/life experience.
