The title of the book is ‘Foreign Language Tai-chi, or You Cannot Be Taught a Foreign Language’.

Originally the book was published in 2006 by Leo Tolstoy Publishers in Tula, Russia and in 2008 by Dmitry Bulanin Publishers in Saint Petersburg, Russia with the title in Russian 'Вас невозможно научить иностранному языку'. Since then the book was translated and published in Spanish, Uzbek and Estonian. Now the time has finally come for English.

My book is for those who are learning a foreign language as well as for those who teach it. In the book I warn foreign language students about possible problems awaiting them while studying a foreign language and give advice on how to approach those problems correctly.

I dare say that the book turned out fun to read, though the translation reflects the original only to some extent, so to the Russian speaking people I would still recommend to read it in the original.

I’d say it’s the book you can safely take to a conference and when that Professor Ivanoff takes floor again and starts going on and on about his favorite ablatives, you can whip it out of your pocket and have a few smiles reading it. That’s what I wish for, my dear colleagues, that’s what I hope for.

Nick Zamyatkin

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
