Description:

Full-time, fixed term, 2 years
Grade 7: £28,132 - £31,644 per annum

Manchester Metropolitan University is one of the UK's largest and most popular Universities. We are the University for World Class Professionals.

The Department of Languages, Information and Communications is undergoing an exciting period of transition which involves the expansion of Linguistics research and teaching. As part of this expansion, the University has been awarded a Leverhulme Trust Award for research on Urban British English. This Leverhulme Trust funded post offers the successful candidate a thoroughly rewarding opportunity to work on an exciting new project looking at the language of young people in a multicultural urban environment.

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic early career researcher with experience in variationist and/or interactional sociolinguistics who is keen to develop their existing research profile and contributing to the growing research successes of the department and the university.

The successful candidate will be working with Dr. Rob Drummond on the project 'Expressing inner city youth identity through Multicultural Urban British English', funded by a Leverhulme Trust Project Grant. An interest in youth language is essential, as is the confidence and ability to work in the sometimes challenging environment of Pupil Referral Units. Experience of youth work in some form would be a distinct advantage.

The ideal candidate will have recent relevant research experience in the analysis of language variation and identity, either from a variationist/sociophonetic or an interactional/ethnographic perspective, or from a perspective combining the two approaches. The successful candidate will be proficient in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of linguistic and ethnographic data, able to disseminate research findings to a variety of stakeholders both within the university and without in appropriate spoken and written formats, and will be confident working under direction and independently.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant area of sociolinguistics.

Interviews are planned for 27th-29th May, with the post starting on 1st July 2014.

For an informal discussion regarding the requirements of the role please contact Dr. Rob Drummond (r.drummond at mmu.ac.uk)
