Linguistic Field(s): Cognitive Science; Computational Linguistics; Psycholinguistics

Call Deadline: 16-Jun-2014

Meeting Description:

On 31 August 2014, the RefNet Workshop on Psychological and Computational Models of Reference Comprehension and Production will take place in Edinburgh, co-located with RO-MAN, SemDial/DialWatt, and AMLaP. The workshop immediately follows the RefNet Summer School, with a similar theme; summer school attendees are especially encouraged to apply.

The 2014 RefNet Workshop aims to bring together current developments in the study of production and comprehension of referring expressions in different scientific disciplines such as psychology, computer science and linguistics. This is a follow up to three successful earlier workshops, PRE-CogSci 2009, PRE-CogSci 2011 and PRE-CogSci 2013, with the same overall theme, which lead to a special issue in the Topics in Cognitive Science journal and a special issue in the journal Language and Cognitive Processes.

Invited Speakers:

Michael K. Tanenhaus, University of Rochester
Kees van Deemter, University of Aberdeen

RefNet Workshop on Psychological and Computational Models of Reference Comprehension and Production

Date: Sunday 31 Aug 2014
Location: School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh, UK
Website: http://www.macs.hw.ac.uk/InteractionLab/refnet/

An informal research workshop will take place, with the aim of sharing the current developments in the study of reference production and comprehension in different scientific disciplines.

We invite submissions on all topics related to reference production/comprehension. Specific topics include, but are not limited to:

- Social and contextual factors influencing reference production and comprehension
- Cooperativeness and perspective-taking in reference production and comprehension.
- Interaction between comprehension and production of referring expressions
- The role of visual context in the production/comprehension of referring expressions
- Psychologically plausible computational models of reference production and comprehension
- Referential communication in interactive settings
- Referential communication in children
- Complex descriptions (e.g., quantified descriptions, relational descriptions)
- The use of vague predicates in referring expressions
- Referential over- and underspecification
- Realisation of referring expressions (including prosody, gesture, eye gaze)
- Data-collection and experimental evaluation methods
- The formal semantics and pragmatics of reference

Both the workshop and the summer school are part of RefNet, a research network funded by the UK's EPSRC.

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form at https://linguistlist.org/donation/donate/donate1.cfm

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later. To do so, go to: https://linguistlist.org/donation/pledge/pledge1.cfm

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to donate by check, money order, PayPal or wire transfer, please visit: http://linguistlist.org/donation/

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only).
