ALTE Course in Productive Skills: Assessing Speaking and Writing

Focus: The course will focus on assessing productive language skills i.e. speaking and writing.The course will be taught by Dr Talia Isaacs (Assessing Speaking) and Dr Guoxing Yu (Assessing Writing), both from the University of Bristol, UK.
Minimum Education Level: No Minimum


Description:
The syllabus will be tailored to meet the requirements of the participants,
and will focus on the
practical application of testing theory. It will address the main issues
associated with the
assessment of productive skills, including:
1. Particularities of assessing productive skills;
2. The construct of speaking ability and a framework for assessing speaking;
3. The construct of writing ability and a framework for assessing writing;
4. Choosing, designing, and critiquing test formats and tasks;
5. Rating scales, raters, and the rating process;
6. Validating speaking and writing tests and developing an ongoing research
and validation agenda;
7. Developing recommendations for your own speaking and writing tests;
Some prior reading may be issued to participants before the course. Further
details will be provided in
advance of the course.
