The Excusive Board of Arab Society of English language Studies and Advisory Board of Arab World Language Journal with cooperation with the King Fahd School of Translation are pleased to announce the International Conference. Conference will be held on 25-27 November 2014 at the King Fahd School of Translation, Tanger, Morocco, Abdel Maled Essaadi University.

The conference will address a range of critically important issues and themes relating to the English language Studies in the Arab Word and beyond. Plenary speakers include some of the leading ones in the region, as well as numerous papers, posters and workshop presentations.

Call for Papers:

We are inviting proposals for paper presentations, workshops/interactive sessions, posters/exhibits 

Themes and Objectives: 

This year’s conference intends to focus on identity formation of the Arab peoples inside the Arab world and outside of it as they come into contact with other cultures through the use of foreign languages, writing or reading literature in Arabic or other languages and translating texts from and into Arabic. We invite abstracts relating to different areas, as delineated below, and which address issues of identity in its relation to culture in a broad sense, from the early stages of learning to adulthood. Thus, the major themes of the conference will cover, without being restricted to:

- Culture in the classroom: Textbooks and cultural representation in GE and ESP
- Teaching English and cultural agenda: relativism vs. absolutism
- Culture and gender representation: Patriarchy vs. feminism
- Self and otherness: Ethnocentrism vs. cosmopolitanism
- Oral history and translation: From pristine, oral accounts to elaborate plot composition
- Translation between mediation and appropriation: The translator as creator
- Culture between translatability and translation
- Culture and visual representation: Still and moving images
- Western eyes on the Arab world: Culture vs. acculturation
- The Arab world and Western hegemony: Globalization and neo-imperialism
- Virtues and virtual communication: Cultural change vs. alienation

Proposal ideas that extend beyond these main thematic areas will also be considered. For more information about the ideas and themes see Strands.

Important Dates:

Abstract submission deadline: Tuesday, 30 September 2014
Notification of acceptance: Authors will receive an official notification of acceptance within a week after their submissions.

Arab World English Journal (AWEJ) will publish a special, peer-reviewed edition of this ASELS conference papers.
