Job Title: Assistant or Associate Professor - Hispanic Linguistics
Job Rank: Asst/Assoc Professor

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics

Required Language(s): Spanish (spa)

Description:

Assistant or Associate Professor - Hispanic Linguistics
University of California, Berkeley

Expected start-date: July 1, 2015

Basic qualifications: Applicants for an assistant professor position
must, at a minimum, be in the process of writing a doctoral
dissertation (or the equivalent) at the time of application. Applicants
for an associate professor position must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in
Hispanic Linguistics or related field at the time of application.

The successful candidate for an assistant professor appointment must
have a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Hispanic Linguistics or a related field by
the time of employment.

Additional qualifications: We seek a research-oriented candidate with a
solid foundation in Spanish linguistics and demonstrated ability to
teach undergraduate courses in phonetics and phonology, morphology
and syntax, semantics and pragmatics, and language variation, as well
as undergraduate and graduate courses in his/her major field(s) of
research. Applicants must have native or near-native fluency in English
and Spanish, demonstrated excellence in teaching, and a well-defined,
original, and, within the scope of the candidate’s experience,
successful research program.

Preferred qualifications: Particularly welcome would be a strong
interest in Spanish in the United States as a research field within a
Spanish/Hispanic linguistics context, and its implications for areas
such as language variation, language contact within a nation or across
borders, bilingualism, diglossia, language maintenance and loss,
politics of language, and related areas. Other areas of interest to the
department include literary linguistics and translation theory. Fluency
in Portuguese is highly desirable, and in another major Romance
language.

The successful candidate will play a leading role in our undergraduate
major track on Spanish and bilingualism, and collaborate in the
training of graduate students in the interdepartmental Ph.D. program in
Romance Languages and Literatures (shared with the French and Italian
Studies departments), as well as with the Linguistics department. Letter
of application, updated curriculum vitae, three letters of
recommendation, teaching statement, research statement, and one
writing sample (maximum of 25 pages) are required of all applicants; a
statement addressing past and/or potential contributions to diversity
through research, teaching, and/or service is optional.

Applications must be submitted on-line no later than 5 November
2014.
